Volunteering with us is #goodforyou

In North London Scout District, volunteers keep our world turning. Each adult spends many rewarding hours each week providing opportunities for young people in their area to expand their horizons and get stuck into Scouting. Many of these experiences are rare in a city like London, and the soft and hard skills learnt will be enduring for every young person. Without the dedication of these individuals, the incredible work done in North London Scout District to produce engaging and invaluable weekday and weekend programmes would not be possible. We canvassed some our leaders, asking why they love being an adult volunteer, and why they thought it was #goodforyou, and these were some of their responses:

Because I care about my community.

To give young people the opportunities that I had growing up in scouting.

However, the young people are not the only ones who benefit from Scouting, as leaders also make just as many bonds. Being a leader in Scouting provides the opportunities to make friends with like-minded people, taking part in exciting trips that form long-lasting relationships. One of our leaders said ‘Our family is a scouting family. We do this to give kids the opportunity to make great memories and experience activities like camping, canoeing and much more that they would not necessarily get the chance to do. We have made many lifetime friends through scouting, as have our kids.’

I came for the camps and never left.

Being a volunteer gives equips you with your own set of important skills learned in unique settings. The ability to collaborate in putting on day sessions and overnight camps for large groups gives you incredible opportunities to fine tune both practical and social skills, for work with both young people, and adults alike. Plus, it allows you to indulge in the activities too, and many adult volunteers leave with additional passions and hobbies that stay with them for years to come.

Being able to teach the skills I learnt as a scout to others is hugely rewarding.

Why would I stop?
